Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay immediately became enthralled after showing her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially aware and taught her how to utilize the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would inspire her later to make a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at the college. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one of the members of the jury, and then go through their garbage. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was immediately hired after graduating from college as an intern at a small studio. The year 1999 was the time she established her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
